  Profile

Born in South Africa in 1957, Hans followed in the footsteps of his parents, who were both professional photographers. He started off with black & white photography and darkroom printing at the age of 11 years.

Having left Cape Town in 1990 to live in Namibia, Hans has concentrated mainly on wildlife photography. One of his most remarkable and award winning pictures, was that of a lion pulling down a kudu. “I followed a pride of lions for three days, before finally, my patience paid off, and I was at the right place at the right time – it’s a picture that will not be captured easily again”, he said.

Over several years, Hans has held photographic workshops in the Etosha National Park, training their field staff in the ways and techniques of photographing the rhino under full moon, as part of their on-going rhino census.

Hans has held two solo photographic exhibitions - The first, entitled, “Images and beyond”, and the second, “Beyond the spectrum of light”.

Much of Hans’ photography has been in the form of commissioned work, from lodges - aviation photography and interiors, to architecture and fashion.

His most expensive B & W print ever sold, was that of the President of Namibia, Sam Nujoma. Hans made a fine art “lith”, 16 x 20 inch print which was signed by the President. It was sold to a German businessman for 5400 Euro! Hans donated the money to an African kindergarten in Windhoek.

As an accomplished B & W Masterprinter, Hans obviously has a great passion for the chemistry of black and white printing. “Much of the chemistry I mix up myself and have tweaked this to produce the results that I enjoy. Digital has come a long way in a relative short period of time, however, I still believe that there is nothing better than a B & W print that was conventionally produced with chemicals – it is pure in every aspect, and should, if treated properly, last forever.
